As I try to catch up with all the great things we have been doing, I missed one from the previous week. Before I headed to the UNCF meeting I was in Shreveport for the Louisiana HBCU Task Force meeting. We discussed lots of strategies for retention, and I shared some of the work we have done with our SAFE program
We hosted a panel sponsored by Rap Sessions on toxic masculinity. Before events like this I like to have dinners where there can be some initial conversation with the guests. We did a small group (about 16) so everyone could sit around the same table and I heard the discussion was powerful.
And then we have a powerful discussion moderated by Jasiri X, and featuring jessica Care moore, Dr. Treva Lindsey, and Dr. Mark Anthony Neal. This is an important topic and one that we had to have. But I always see these as just a start.
And that Saturday we participated in the annual UNCF Walk For Education which supports the city’s 2 UNCF schools, Dillard and Xavier. This was the first time I didn’t run (bad sinus infection that I am still battling as I write tonight, a whole week later).
But Adria ran and came in first for female faculty/staff members, and first for the 40–50 age group. This is always a fun event!
