So we figured out that this was the 10th year we’ve had students for Thanksgiving. So we had 9 Dillard students, 1 Xavier student (his twin sister is a Dillard student), a Dillard alum, a Talladega alum (my wife’s cousin, a cosmetic chemist doing make-up for the Bayou Classic), and a Philander alum (Carmela who was a freshman in 2009 and has been with us for 10 straight Thanksgivings).
This was probably the first time we had more food than folks because we had some surprise donations. An alum from Houston sent us one of these smoked turkeys. We hear this is a thing and it went fast. We had 2 fried turkeys as well.
The twins’ mom sent a gift card to cover the Honey Baked ham, and they brought some sparkling cider. On top of that, their grandmother in Kansas City sent these homemade rolls (my wife is still raving about them).
So they ate and ate. Then had an assortment of desserts. Our neighbor and Dillard alum did a sweet potato pie, and my wife made several cakes, including an Oreo cheesecake that I barely got the last piece! We had a die hard group that hung out for almost 5 hours (I once went to bed with Philander students in my house until midnight- including Carmela who is with us every year!) Dillard students have been more reserved but maybe DU22 will start a new trend — it was a lot of fun.
I am always thankful for days like this, but this year was even more special as others shared their resources so that we had more than enough.
And for the first time, I have some leftover turkey.
