Interesting Week
Every week is different. This one was no exception for me.

I got to see the cover for a new book for which I wrote a chapter. Hazing is still a huge issue in American higher education, and it seems like a losing fight. But hopefully we present some new insights in this book.

I had a great time at St. Augustine’s High School to talk with students. We had a wide ranging discussion particularly about the political process. It is important for young people to pay attention to the process.

About 25 students and 25 faculty and administrators discussed some big issues during my monthly executive council meeting. We dealt with the idea of family, a word used a lot in higher education but not clearly defined. We also discussed what is a student’s role in their success, and what is the institution’s. It was a great conversation.

But this was the real surprise. My colleague over at Xavier decided to offer a Twitter bet for the basketball games. I’ve been here almost 8 years and this has never happened, so I thought it was interesting.

Within an hour, I accepted, even knowing that both of our teams are down this year, but I always bet on my squad, no matter the consequence.

Both teams lost, and pretty soundly. Benjamin and I slipped out once the fate was sealed. Later I saw this tweet. But they had me confused…

So I wanted to make sure I reminded everyone of the bet, which was to wear Xavier apparel. And I did…

Socks. And note the not so subtle troll of front page headlines! But since they decided to start these challenges, I offered my own.
Five days later, no response! LOL So , there won’t be a free throw contest this year. But I’m not agreeing to any other bets until we do this one!
