This past weekend our Mock Trial team competed at Rice University’s invitational tournament. We are just into our third season. Last year was a great success. We emerged from our regional tournament to make the opening round of the national championships. When the new American Mock Trial power rankings came out, we were ranked (about 277 of the 700+ teams are ranked).
So we were invited to a tournament that included teams from UT Arlington, Baylor, LSU, Houston Baptist, and Milsaps (who hosted a tournament last month that they won, and we came in second).
This weekend we competed against four teams, all of them ranked, and three of them higher ranked. First round, Texas A&M. Second round, University of Houston. Third round, Rice. Through 3 rounds our team was undefeated.
Sunday was the fourth round against the University of St. Thomas, a former national champion and highest ranked team in this tournament.
We beat them too.
So this was historic- Dillard University’s mock trial team won its first invitational tournament on October 14, 2018. In addition, 3 students received individual honors:
LydiaPaige Moffett ’21, Outstanding Attorney
Traelon Rodgers ’22, Outstanding Attorney
Khaelyn Jackson ’22, Outstanding Witness
I love mock trial because it provides one of the best ways for us to PROVE that Dillard students can compete with anyone! The competition included large, rich, and highly ranked by US News schools. And we still won.
If this young team continues to build its confidence, we’re on the verge of building a dynasty. We’ll keep you posted!
