Dillard Notables of 2019: #5 The Public Intellectuals
I have really been committed to having more of the Dillard experts providing their thoughts in the public space. We have an impressive group of scholars and they are very good at providing meaningful analysis of contemporary issues. Here are some of our public intellectuals and their interviews/commentaries this year.
Dr. Corey Hebert, medical director

Dr. Abdalla Darwish, physics, was an invited speaker for the SPIE Annual Symposium Aug 11- 16, Conference Photonic Fiber and Crystal Devices: “Advances in Materials and Innovations in Device Applications XIII: Photonic Crystals, Fibers, and Thin Films: Materials and Properties.” Dr. Darwish also had two patents approved in 2019.

Dr. Gary Clark, political science
- Louisiana gubernatorial results:
Dr. Marc Barnes, VP for institutional advancement, wrote an editorial, “The Road to HBCU Self-Sustainability,” for Diverse Issues in Higher Education.
Dr. Kiki Barnes, athletic director, was interviewed by College Athletics and the Law for an article, “Build athletics departments to stand strong even in the face of storms”
Zella Palmer, director of the Ray Charles program:

Dr. Kevin Bastian, director of student support services, was interviewed by The New Orleans Advocate for an article, “Louisiana’s biggest teacher shortage? Black men are a rarity in public schools.”
Keith Morris, film, was a featured guest on a podcast about the film industry where he was able to discuss the work of Dillard Film:
Dr. Kristen Broady, dean of the college of business, was interviewed on Roland Martin Unfiltered discussing the racial wealth gap:
Dr. Bernard Singleton, natural sciences, was interviewed on water quality in the Lower Ninth Ward:
Dr. Hong Dai, math, was interviewed about the Chinese New Year as president of the New Orleans Chinese association.
We hope to expand the number of public intellectuals being sought by the media in years to come.
