I’ve always said that Dillard has a great number of public intellectuals for a small school. In 2017, we were even more present in the media offering our expertise on a variety of subject.

Dr. Ashraf Esmail in criminal justice led the way this year with a high number of interviews on matters related to crime. He probably is the city’s most interviewed criminologist these days. You can check out some of his interviews below.

One of our other prominent public intellectuals is Dr. Robert Collins in urban studies. Dr. Collins comments on a range of issues from city planning, to water management, to urban terrorism. This fall he played a key role in the mayoral election coverage. You can check out some of his work as well.

Of course, Dr. Gary Clark in political science is a consistent presence on WBOK radio, his own cable show, as well as other media outlets. Dillard Today had a nice story this year on his career.

L. Kasimu Harris, our assistant director in marketing and communications, is an accomplished writer and artist, and was featured in a New York Times interview about Juneteenth.

We also played a huge role in the mayoral election cycle. As usual, Dillard was a prime location for debates. We held four, including three with mayoral candidates. One was specifically focused on the African American male, and another was broadcast live on WDSU.

So 2017 was a great year for showcasing the expertise at Dillard.
