We Just Broke an Alumni Giving Record — and Rewrote a News Story from 2011
On November 1, 2011 I was in New Orleans to be announced as president of Dillard University. Of course that was an…
One of the biggest stories was our record alumni giving. I wrote a post this summer which discussed the trend from 4% in 2011 to 21% in 2017. We’ve had tremendous alumni engagement each year with more and more alums participate in annual giving. This new rate is above the national average for all institutions, and on par for private universities.
We’ve used a lot of solid strategies, including what we call Key Cities events where a team travels to a city with a sizeable alumni base to engage with alumni and friends and share updates. We know everyone can’t make it to campus each year, so this is a way to personalize the work on campus beyond our magazine, email newsletters, and social media. Above is a picture from our Dallas event where we were joined by the Tom Joyner Foundation as we will be the March 2018 TJMS School of the Month.
We also have embraced Giving Tuesday. This year we set a goal of $100,000 and worked with a team that included our pre-alumni association to engage the community.
We were pleasantly surprised to have our efforts covered by WWL-TV that evening as well. A nice news story not just about giving, but student involvement in the process.

We just about doubled our goal for Giving Tuesday, capping a great year of philanthropy. We definitely want to keep this momentum as we head into 2018. Thanks to all of our alumni and friends who have supported Dillard University!
And remember: You still have time to give in 2017!
