Dillard Lands 8 Finalists for the 2017 HBCU Digest Awards

I think this is now the 7th year of the HBCU Digest Awards. This is a great idea by Jarrett Carter, founder of HBCU Digest, to honor HBCUs but also a great way to provide some positive press. I can’t believe no one had done anything like this until recently, but it is a great idea.
In fact, we hosted the event here at Dillard in 2014, and I think I have been to 3 or 4 of the conferences. There are so many opportunities for HBCUs in the media, but we continue to be a little timid in getting out great stories that spread.

My theme at Dillard for 2016–17 was #TheChampIsHere in honor of Muhammad Ali who died last year. Our 8 finalist nominations tied the most we’ve had (we had 8 in 2014), and more than any other UNCF institution! Tennessee State leads the way with 12, followed by Hampton & Southern. We’re tied with North Carolina Central for 4th.
Note- all of them are much larger so as always, pound for pound we’re a beast!
Win or lose, all of these people and programs are champs to me. So let me introduce our finalists:
Best Student Government Association

Best Fine Arts (Dillard Theater)

Best STEM Program (Dillard Physics)

Male Faculty Member of the Year (Dr. Abdalla Darwish, physics)

Alumna of the Year (Dr. Dorothy Perrault)

Female Student of the Year (Chelsea Bosley, Miss Dillard University)

Male Coach of the Year (Mike Newell, Men’s Basketball)

Male President of the Year

Wish us luck! I will be at the awards on July 14th in DC after speaking at the Alpha Phi Alpha Convention that afternoon in Baltimore.
